Vic's Story: A Full Life

A builder by trade, Vic lived and worked all over New South Wales before retiring to Grafton in 1991 with his wife and dance partner of six decades, June. Vic continued to be active in his community, including helping to build the local croquet court, until he started experiencing problems with his vision.

“My driving vision got a bit blurred and it was harder to focus,” Vic recalls. “The optician adjusted my glasses, but it kept getting worse.”

Within weeks, Vic was diagnosed with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). He quickly lost sight in one eye and partial sight in the other. Injection treatment managed to save Vic’s remaining vision, but he struggled to cope with the fact that he was no longer able to drive or help around the house.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’ve been there every step of the way for Vic & June, with advice on dietary changes to improve Vic’s wellbeing, guidance around low vision aids and support for June when she was applying for a carer’s allowance.

Vic and June have the support they’ve needed since Vic's diagnosis – and I’m delighted to say that they are still dancing together after 65 years.
