History

Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) was established in 2001 as the Macular Degeneration Foundation.
Dr Paul Beaumont FRACS FRANZCO AM, was the founding director of Macular Degeneration Foundation and served the first Chairperson's term from 2001 to 2004. Dr Beamont had a vision to develop a patient-focused organisation to support those living with or affected by macular degeneration. His passion and commitment helped form the Foundation into the organisation that today delivers support to thousands. After 12 years of service, Dr Beaumont completed his term as director in December 2013.
Despite being the leading cause of blindness and severe vision loss in Australia, in 2001 there was little awareness of macular degeneration, risk factors and prevention.
The organisation changed its name to Macular Disease Foundation Australia in January 2012, to reflect the need for support and services to be available across all macular diseases, including diabetic eye disease.
MDFA provides education programs for the community and health care professionals, has become a significant funder of Australian researchers, and provides front-line services for information, guidance and support for those at risk of or living with macular disease.
MDFA is the voice of the macular disease community and advocates strongly for access and affordability of treatment and rehabilitation, having achieved significant outcomes through its representation.
MDFA has become a world leader in raising awareness of macular degeneration. It will continue to build on its achievements in order to meet its mission to reduce the incidence and impact of macular disease in Australia.
