Mobility Aids
There are several different types of mobility aids to help people maintain, regain and enhance their independent mobility, ranging from canes to sensor devices or devices containing a Global Positioning System (GPS) locator, or for some a guide dog.
An assessment with a low vision service is the best way to identify the most appropriate aids to suit each individual’s needs.
“With deteriorating central vision due to wet macular degeneration in both my eyes, I found it difficult to read the numbers on the buses as they approached. I am now using a white cane after having had training sessions in its use. The bus now stops when they see my cane and the driver announces the number of the bus. The cane also helps me to gauge the height and width of steps and to recognise rough surfaces and gaps on walking areas”. Margaret
